Showcase: Karl Erik Brøndbo

Meet  Karl Erik Brøndbo a 31 years old freelance cinematographer based in Oslo, Norway. Karl studied journalism, documentary film and graduated last year from the Norwegian National Film School. He shoots both digital and analogic but film is his real passion.

What is photography for you?

My hobby, passion and fortunately my job.

When did you start taking pictures?

I have worked as a cameraman since I was 21. Didn’t take stills until I was 24-25.

You portrait are often very cinematic. Tell us a story about one of the people you have photographed that made you want to take their picture.

I took the photo above when I was really drunk. It was near closing time in a bar in Oslo (Nylon). I liked the way he was looking at her. I didn’t know them and they didn’t know that I took the photo, but I found out later that they were going to get married.

Which aspects of your pictures make them stand out as yours, what is your signature?

I guess others should tell me, but I guess I prefer the cinematic look.
My movies look like this:

How do you approach someone for a photograph? How do you set up your work?

Not many of my photos are planned. I don’t like to leave home without a camera and have my contax T3 in my pocket all the time. And cinematic moments suddenly appear.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to face to get a great picture?

In my early twenties I worked with news, and almost fell out of a car covering a bicycle race. The car was driving a few meters in front of all the riders. It stopped to pick me up, but accelerated so fast that I almost slid out of the station wagon. Fortunately someone pulled me back in and that was nice because I would have ruined the national bicycle championship and myself.

What`s the message of your photos, what do you want to communicate or accomplish through your work?

It’s no symbolism in my images. No messages. Only moods and feelings.

What`s the question you wish I had asked? …and what is the answer?

Q: Can I offer you a years supply of film, my friend?
A: yes please.
